Approximately two weeks ago, we made the decision to move the CLS Forum, the clann Alba Forums and the T-bucket Forums to a virtual Private Server. We had investigated the possibility of using a reseller account to house all three forums, but the recent growth we’ve witnessed on the T-Bucket Forums was clearly out-growing a shared hosting environment and would soon be straining the restrictions of a reseller package.
After spending considerable time comparing VPS plans, with their myriad options and prices, we finally decided to purchase a VPS package from KnownHost. While it has only been two weeks since the move, all indications are showing the move was a good one. The members of all three forums have been pleased with the sudden increase of the forums’ operation. Page load times have been cut drastically.
We were somewhat concerned with the level of service we would receive, as the support team at Downtown host were always quick in resolving problems. Thankfully, we can report the support team at KnownHost has been just as timely in responding to our questions.
We still have some blog sites running on the Downtown host server and are very pleased with how well they are running. If VPS plans were offered at Downtown Host, we likely would have kept the forums on their servers. It is a tremendous relief to see the level of service we are receiving from KnownHost, as well.

There is a lot of talk about having ‘one-click blog installations’ with some hosts. That’s close to being true, some hosts do offer Fantastico on their control panels. However we do not recommend this type of WordPress installation, as it leaves much to be desired. The Fantastico installation will set up a blog for you with very little effort on your part, but the installation is a plain, vanilla installation. There are just two themes available for to choose from – a light-blue and a pea-green. Nor will you have any of the plugins to help you maintain and promote your blog. And when the next version of the WordPress software comes along, the Fantastico installation can cause some real problems with the upgrade procedure.
A novice will often opt for a Fantastico install of a new blog and then spend hours, trying to locate, install and configure the blog plugins, so their blog will run at peak performance. We can set everything up so you will need no technical skills to start blogging on your own site.
