My name is Mike Ermel and I’ve been operating various forum and blog Web sites since August 2004. After six years of trying to get things organized a bit better, I am finally able to put news and announcements about our various sites and services in a central location.
My first site was a forum site, focusing on Scotland in general and Clan Lamont in particular. The site was established on phpBB2 software. In February 2005, I converted the site to vBulletin 3.0 software. It was a relatively small but active site until late-2008. In September 2009, I made the rather painful decision to shut the site down. In the interim years, I opened three other forums sites, all on vBulletin software.
When vBulletin started the roll-out of their much-anticipated vBulletin 4 software, I took one look and started shopping for an alternative forum software package. I looked at several possibilities, including using WordPress/BuddyPress, Simple Machine Forums, phpBB3 or MyBB as alternatives. I had looked at Invision Power Board a year earlier, as well. I finally decided to start rating each possible alternative, looking at how different bits of the software worked and how friendly their supports communities seemed to be. In every evaluation, Invision kept bobbing right back up to the top, so I converted four forum sites from vBulletin to Invision Power Board in November 2009.

I also use WordPress 3.0 on some Web sites, including this one. And I’ve just begun using Thesis, an absolute-killer WordPress theme/framework. Installing Thesis on my personal blog is what has given me the initiative to get back to working a bit more with WordPress. WordPress is a powerful piece of software and with the addition of very few plugins and Thesis to a site, you can create an easily-customized site that features incredible Search Engine Optimization.
